How does the NFL playoff schedule work?

How many teams from each division make it in, who plays who; and how many games are played before the superbowl.

The teams get seeded 1-6 based on records. The 1-4 seeds are division champs and the 5 and 6 teams are wild card teams.

On wild card weekend in both conferences, The 3 seed hosts the 6 seed and the 4 hosts the 5, even if the 5 seed has a better record. Both conference's top seeds get a bye. (4 games this weekend)

The next weekend, the Divisional Round, the 1 seed gets the lowest seed that advances (which could be 4, 5, or 6) and the 2 seed hosts the highest seed that advances (3, 4, or 5). (4 more games, bringing the total to 8)

In the Conference Championship round, the highest seed which advances hosts the lower seed to determine who plays in the Super Bowl. (2 games, bringing the total to 10. This is either a team's 2nd or 3rd game depending on the seed).

In the Super Bowl, the AFC and NFC Champions play at a neutral site to determine that season's champion. (The 11th game and a team's 3rd or 4th).

The #3 and #6 teams play against each other in the Wild Card...

The #4 and #5 teams play against each other in the Wild Card...

The winner of each of those games play against The #1 or #2 teams in the Divisional Playoffs...The winner of those 2 games play against each other for either the NFC or AFC Championship game...The winner of the NFC and AFC will play against each other in the Superbowl...The top 2 teams in the League...
The play-offs games are made by seeds.

The #1 and #2 seed in the AFC and NFC get the wild card bye since they deserved it by getting a good record in regular season. Winner of divisions always make it in, even if they are 7-9, but they team would get the 4th seed, the 5th and 6th seeds play the 4th and 3rd seeds in the Wild Card weekend. 4th and 3rd are home. #1 and #2 also have to win their division. If one team is 12-4, but don't win their division, they cant be any top 4 seeds, and team say 11-5 and win their division fill their place.

1 or 2 teams make it in each division, it all depends on reg. season record. 4 games are played in Wild card, 4 in Divisional, 2 in Conference, and 1 in Super Bowl. So a grand total of 11 games are played in the play-offs. 12 if you count the Pro Bowl. Hope this Helps!
in todays setup you have 4 division champions in each confrence, the two best teams that are'nt a division champion will make a wildcard entry. the two division chanpions awarded the #1 and #2 seed(two best records in regular season)will have a bye(off)week. the remaining two division champions seeded #3,#4 will play on the first weekend of playoffs known as wildcard weekend.the wildcard team seeded #6 will play the #3 seeded team, the #5 seeded team will play the #4 seeded team.the winners in each confrence will advance to the divisional playoffs.this is thw second game(week) of playoffs the surviving teams keep their origional seed and the #1 seed plays the surviving team from wildcard weekend with the lowest seed.the #2 seed gets the other team(this happens in each confrence).the winners of this contest advance to their respective conference championship.home game to be decided by the highest seed.the winner then advances to the superbowl.so if you are a wildcard team, from getting tp the playoffs to winning it all you will have to endure a 4 game winning streak, the top 2 seeds in each confrence will only have to win 3. in short 4 division champs,2 wildcard teams for each confrence.
AFC and NFC division champions go against each other, the winner of the first game goes to the Conference Championship, and the winner of that goes to the Superbowl
